Hilja Grönfors

Traditional Roma way of life is more than familiar for Master Folk Singer Hilja Grönfors. In the 1950′ she lived the Roma life travelling all over Finland with her family. Hilja loved to sing already when she was only a child. Her great interest in the Roma culture and especially music forced Hilja to become a collector – she has spent thousands of kilometers on the road and by now she has a collection of more than 100 Finnish Roma songs.

Hilja has toured in many countries in Europe and North America. She has
received the title of Master Folk Singer in Kaustinen Folk Music Festival and the Emma Award from the Finnish National Group of IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) as the best folk music album published in Finland in 2008.

The documentary film on Hilja, ”This Land Was Not Mine”, was released in 2010 and broadcast on Finnish national TV. She received the Finland Award from the Finnish Cultural Ministry in 2014, and her latest album Katta Ame Aavaa (Global Music Centre 2018) has received rave reviews form the international World Music press.
